I suppose at some point this will cease to be news, but the franchises that made LAN gaming great continue to turn their back on it, providing a long slow obituary for the service. Command & Conquer is the latest.

Aliens vs. Predator released today, and PC players are stuck with peer-to-peer matchmaking for a little longer while Rebellion gets a dedicated server ready "in the next few days," according to the studio.

In a Steam forum post today, Rebellion had this to say:

There’s always a catch. Rapture was an underwater utopia, created as a permanent getaway for the world’s brightest minds… but, the place quickly degenerated into a brainpower-bolstered battleground. Which is good for us, as it means BioShock 2’s packing a fairly robust multiplayer mode. But, again, there’s a catch: no LAN or dedicated servers.

How dare 2K Games turn its back on the PC multiplayer community that made BioShock ... oh ... uh ... that's right.

During the Modern Warfare 2 no-dedicated servers controversy, DICE was quick to say they would be supported in PC versions of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

You might recall last month that David Brickley, a Rebellion senior producer, was asked directly, three times, to confirm dedicated server support in Alien vs. Predator, and wouldn't say yes or no. The studio's chief now officially confirms its presence.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Jason Kingsley, the CEO, said:

Well, we now have absolute proof that at least one member of the PC gaming community wasn’t living in the hornets’ nest Infinity Ward stepped on when it announced that Modern Warfare 2 won’t support dedicated servers. Unfortunately, that one person is none other than id Software’s John Carmack.
