SilverStone HDDBoost Review

Submitted by Dave Mincel on Fri, 02/26/2010 - 00:35.

Many people have shied away from SSDs due to their somewhat limited storage capacity and high price for the drives.  Spindle-based hard drives on the other hand have massive amounts of storage space but lack the performance of SSDs.  SilverStone’s $50 HDDBoost looks to marry the best of both worlds by allowing us to seamlessly link a budget SSD to a hard drive for increased performance.  However, does it work?

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB Hard Drive Review

Submitted by Dave Mincel on Thu, 02/11/2010 - 23:52.

In a computing world that is seeing its storage needs rapidly expand, we have seen a quick surge in the capacities of today’s hard drives. While we all know that the recent SSD revolution has produced some of the fastest consumer-available storage mediums around, these drives lack the capacity to store large amounts of data at a reasonable price. This is where drives like the Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB come into the equation.

The SSDNow V+ will be capable of 230MB/s read and 180MB/s write.

SSDs Growing Steadily, Will Jump 54% by 2013

Submitted by Dave Mincel on Mon, 01/25/2010 - 10:23.

Never mind complaints about high prices for low capacities, some early stuttering problems, questions about life expectancy, and other concerns--the SSD market grew by 14 percent in 2009, shipping over 11 million units, according to IDC. And that's just the beginning. You can expect to see solid growth in 2010, and by 2013, SSD's compound growth rate (CAGR) over 2008-2013 will reach 54 percent.

Submitted by Dave Mincel on Wed, 01/20/2010 - 22:52.

As the SSD marketplace expands at a near-breakneck pace, OEMs and manufacturers alike are moving quickly to cover as many price points as possible.  One of the most popular portions of this market doesn’t lie with the high-performance, stratospherically-priced drives but rather with drives that offer the perfect mix of value and performance.  Enter G.Skill’s Falcon II.

Two companies were competing with each other and time to roll out the world's first USB 3.0 hard rive. In the end, it proved to be an anti-climax as one of those two companies, Freecom, failed to deliver the USB 3.0 hard drive that it had announced back in September. Submitted by Dave Mincel on Wed, 11/18/2009 - 15:00.

There's no way around it - if SSDs are to eventually replace mechanical hard drives, manufacturers have to find a way to increase capacity at a reasonable cost. So far, every SSD vendor has failed on both accounts, which is why we're excited to see OCZ release a 1TB SSD.
